Frederick Walrath For Alfred University NY Art Pottery Matte Green Vase Wonderful arts and crafts three handled form with great organic matte green color and glaze. Bottom marked with Alfred NY 1903 FW. Vase is 6 3/4" tall and 4 3/4" wide. A hand-crafted art pottery vase attributed to Frederick Walrath (American, 1871-1953), produced during his studies at Alfred University under the instruction of Charles Fergus Binns (American, 1857-1934), the pivotal figure often referred to as the “Father of American Art Pottery. This vase is executed in a refined Arts and Crafts style, featuring a tall, slender ovoid body tapering gently toward the base. Three gracefully curved handles spring from the shoulder, forming angular, openwork loops that enhance the verticality and sculptural presence of the form. The shoulder gently swells before transitioning into a narrower, short neck, terminating in a slightly everted rim. The surface is finished in a matte green glaze, characteristic of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic and reminiscent of the matte surfaces championed by Binns at Alfred. The glaze displays subtle tonal variations, lending depth and a soft visual texture to the minimalist design. Frederick Walrath’s work during his Alfred University period is significant for its disciplined form, attention to proportion, and mastery of matte glazes, all hallmarks of Binns’s influential teaching. The piece exemplifies the transition in American ceramics from ornate Victorian decoration to the simpler, nature-inspired forms of the Arts and Crafts movement. Excellent Condition
