Newcomb College 1898 Vintage Arts and Crafts Pottery High Glaze VaseA rare and exceptional early example of Newcomb College pottery, dated 1898 and decorated by Frances Lawrence Howe Cocke. The vase features a graceful, wide-shouldered form with a slender neck, decorated in underglaze blue with stylized clover blossoms and leafy vines encircling the body. The crisp incised design and soft color palette exemplify the Arts and Crafts ideals of handcrafted beauty and natural inspiration. Early Newcomb pieces from the 1890s are highly prized, and works by Cocke are especially scarce. This vase represents not only the artistry of one of Newcomb’s pioneering women decorators but also the formative years of the Newcomb enterprise. A museum-quality and highly collectible piece of Southern art pottery history.Excellent condition. Stilt marks and a couple of tiny flecks to base ring. No chips, cracks, damage or repair of any kind. Bottom marked with Newcomb Logo, P, '98 and cipher for Frances Lawrence Howe Cocke.Vase is 4 1/4" tall and 5" wide.
