Founded in 1903 in Detroit, Michigan, by Mary Chase Perry Stratton and Horace Caulkins, Pewabic Pottery not only produced professional art ceramics but also functioned as a hub for ceramic education and experimentation. Pewabic student pieces were created as part of the pottery's educational programs, which were designed to teach students the craft of pottery-making and glazing. These works often include vases, bowls, tiles, and small decorative objects. While they exhibit some of the same hallmarks as professional Pewabic pieces—like earthy clay bodies and experimentation with glazes—they are typically more modest in design and execution. Student pieces may feature slight imperfections, unusual forms, or experimental glazes, as they served as learning tools for aspiring potters. These works were sometimes marked differently or left unmarked altogether, making identification more challenging. However, they are still admired today for their connection to Pewabic’s legacy of education, innovation, and craftsmanship. Collectors value student pieces for their uniqueness, as they often showcase the early skills and creativity of artists who passed through Pewabic’s historic studio. Excellent Original Condition
